Gruene Dance Hall and Watertower

Traveling Texas Historic Gruene is the next stop in our week long trip to Texas. Just a quick hop from our resort in Canyon Lake, it brings the country and traditions of Texas to life. It’s like stepping back in time and also, makes for an amazing experience. Wooden walkways, cobblestone streets, and a watertower guiding our way! Really a firm sense of community and a trip back to the old west!

Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar

We really like discovering the uniqueness of every community we visit and what better than an old mill converted to a restaurant right along the river. Great food, people, views and a piece of history is what really makes this local restuarant unique. They took what remained of the old mill that burned down and created an excellent dining experience. The menu had so much to pick from and everything looked so good. We finally settled on a burger, pulled pork sandwich, the biggest short stack of onion rings I’ve every seen and all the traditional Texas fixings. Come hungry because there is so much food, you have leftovers for days! Get there early because this place is popular!

Gruene Dance Hall

After dinner we take a stroll over to the Gruene Dance Hall, located just steps away from Gristmill River Bar and Grill. As you walk in the door, the first part is like a saloon and then on the backside of the bar is the dance hall itself. We just happened to step in as the band was getting set up. Benches line the walls, tables and benches down the middle as well as an empty space for anyone who wants to kick up their heels. As you walk around the building, there are the “walls of fame” which are signed copies of all who have visited and played at the Gruene Dance Hall and let me tell you the list is a who’s who of music and entertainment. Of course, we had to stay and listen to the band place some great jazz and blues music. This is definitely a hotspot for entertainment in this awesome little town.

A Night of Fun

Traveling Texas Historic Gruene was a great step back in time. History abounds and there is a real sense of community, warm and welcoming with a step back in time. We took a walk around the town, stopped in some of the stores, checked out the Gruene Mansion Inn and really enjoyed the peaceful, down home atmosphere of this amazing community. It was so fun to see people enjoying themselves at the Dance Hall, having a glass of wine at the local wine shop as they sat outside and relaxed in the warm weather evening. So far our journey traveling Texas is proving to be very exciting and enjoyable! If you missed our previous stop in Canyon Lake, you can check it out here. Stay tuned for our next stop — Wimberley!
